Foley Catheters: Uses, Procedure, and Care Explained


A Foley catheter is a flexible medical tube used to drain urine from the bladder when a person is unable to do so naturally. It is one of the most commonly used urinary catheters in hospitals and clinical settings. The device is inserted through the urethra into the bladder and is held in place by a small inflatable balloon filled with sterile water.


Foley catheters are widely used for both short-term and long-term urinary drainage. They are often required in patients undergoing surgery, those with urinary retention, spinal cord injuries, or conditions that affect bladder control. In some cases, they are also used in critically ill patients who need strict monitoring of urine output.
